Performance Evaluation of Tcp Congestion Control Algorithms over Umts

چکیده
TCP congestion control was designed and optimized for wired networks. During recent years, however, the popularity of wireless network infrastructures enabling ubiquitous Internet access, such as Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS), has grown considerably. As a consequence, many improved TCP congestion control algorithms, able to effectively operate over hybrid wired/wireless networks, as well as, layer 2 optimizations, hiding to higher layers the inefficiencies of radio links, have been proposed by the scientific community. This work investigates the performance of TCP congestion control over UMTS networks. We have focused the attention on the interactions between UMTS RLC error recovery, and New Reno or Westwood+ TCP congestion control algorithms. Using the ns-2 network simulator, we have shown that a proper tuning of RLC parameters can ensure an efficient usage of the UMTS wireless channel.

One of TCP's key tasks is to react and avoid network congestion episodes which normally arise in packet switched networks. A wide literature is available concerning the behaviour of congestion control algorithms in many di erent scenarios and several congestion control algorithms have been proposed in order to improve performances in speci c scenarios. In this paper we focus on the UMTS wireles...
متن کاملMulticast in UMTS: Adopting TCP-Friendliness
In this paper, we present a novel mechanism for the multicast congestion control over UMTS networks. The proposed mechanism is based on the well known TCP-Friendly Multicast Congestion Control (TFMCC) scheme. The key challenge in the design of the new scheme lies in improving the TFMCC mechanism to cope with the packet losses caused by either the temporary or the permanent degradation of the wi...
متن کاملPerformance of Transmission control Protocol Congestioncontrol Algorithms on Teledesic satellites constellations
Satellite networking is different from wired or wireless networks. TCP/IP performance and behavior with respect to normal wireless network and wired networks are different from one another. As the architecture of TCP/IP protocol was not designed to perform well over high-latency or noisy channels and so its performance over satellite networks are totally different. The properties of satellite c...
متن کاملEvaluation of the end-to-end TCP performance for vertical handover using intermediate switching network
Most of the traffic in today’s network uses the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) as the transport layer protocol for reliable end-to-end packet delivery. However, TCP considers packet loss to be the result of network congestion which makes it unsuitable for mobile wireless communication, where sporadic and temporary packet losses are usual due to fading, shadowing, hand-off and other radio e...

Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) is a third-generation cellular network that enables high-speed mobile Internet access. This paper evaluates and compares the performance of two wellknown versions of Transmission Control Protocol (TCP), namely, Vegas and Reno, in a UMTS environment. Bulk data transfer was considered in the simulation with varying radio channel conditions. We ass...
